The School Resource Officer (SRO) program at Laguna Hills High School was implemented during the 2008-2009 school year. The first "campus cop," had tremendous success reducing crime and fostering relationships with the students and school staff. Over the years, the program has seen a substantial decrease of problems in and around the high school. The SRO program has led to a greater partnership between law enforcement and the school staff and students in addressing law enforcement issues. By having the SRO on the high school campus, drug use, gang issues, and fights on campus have decreased.
In addition, the SRO provides presence at three elementary schools in the city. While the primary focus is to enhance campus safety, the program has also allowed officers to interact with parents on campus and at PTSA meetings, giving the public a clearer view of the issues surrounding youth in South Orange County.
Our current School Resource Officer continues to take a proactive approach to prevent issues at the schools and his main goal is to focus on problems that our youth are currently facing - alcohol, drugs and violence.
