Did you know that our country uses over 400 million pounds of pesticides annually? Did you know that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup that is used in our parks and sports fields here in LH is now found in breast milk and urine? The WHO has announced that glyphosate is a probable carcinogen and The Lancet medical journal has called glyphosate a neurotoxin. That bothers me. Roundup and Speed-Zone, even if it’s used just as a spot treatment are harmful and should not be used in a place where our children play. Did you know that glyphosate can stay in the soil for years since the last spray? And when it rains, our water runoff goes to the watershed at Newport Bay, one of the top migrating birding sites in our country. My idea for the community where I love to live, is to start with pesticide free parks and sports fields. Other cities such as Reno NV, Dover NH, Eugene OR, Encinitas CA, and more, are pesticide free or currently working on it. Why not us?

Overnight street parking permits should be implemented for residential neighborhoods with a limit of 4 per household. As South OC gets more and more crowded they city should implement this initiative now. There are too many commercial vehicles parked on residential streets as well as homes that have multiple broken down cars on their driveways and in front of their homes. The 72 hour rule is not working, is not enforced, and does not address the issues at hand.

I object to the plan to remove the Mazda dealership commercial space, and rezone 60% of it as residential space. One of the charms of Laguna Hills is that its residential space is built out, and we are not experiencing the residential blight that is occurring in Mission Viejo and Laguna Niguel. We are in desperate need of attractive retail space with relevant tenants - the majority of time I go shopping I am leaving Laguna Hills because we don't have appropriate retail tenants. The LAST thing we need is more high-density housing! The housing development next to the Laguna Hills Mall makes me want to cry! Enough already! Fix our commercial space and stop selling out to the highest bidder!

Recently, the city Council in Irvine voted 5-0 to eliminate the use of toxic pesticides. I believe that Laguna Hills should do the same to protect all people and animals in our community. We need to eliminate these toxic chemicals from the landscaping plan and also adopt an organic, integrated pest-management program, which eliminates the use of synthetic pesticides under all circumstances and incorporates manual removal, weed whacking, soil nutrient management and, if necessary, the use of organic pesticides as a means for weed abatement.
Laguna Hills can work with Irvine Non Toxic to make this a reality as well as Beyond Pesticides, a non profit that can help us transition away from using our current landscaping methods.
Please see this article in OC Weekly that inspired this post....http://www.ocweekly.com/news/how-irvine-became-socals-first-non-toxic-city-7317638.

In the rains of 12/2010, the bike path bridge on Aliso Creek that was right next to the 5 Freeway (just down from Aliso Parkway and behind the Wendy's and Performance Bike store was washed out.
There have been no attempts to rebuild the bridge. Instead the city of Laguna Hills put up a chain link fence to try to block traffic, and rerouted all traffic to the nearest road crossing about 1/2 a mile away. By not replacing the bridge and by putting up a fence, Laguna Hills effectively cut off the trail spur that went up to Aliso Parkway and all the retail space in the area. Many people used that trail to access the area, and to walk to work or to cross safely under the 5 Freeway.
Now, instead of having a safe bridge crossing across Aliso Creek, people are crossing the creek haphazardly on stepping stones, and clambering up the creek banks. The fence the city installed has been cut, the city repaired it, and it has been cut again and is now rolled back. Can we please get a bridge?

It seems like needed City maintenance is being deferred as a way to fund the City Manager's outrageous salary and benefits. For example, our local El Conejo Park street fence and park name board has been allowed to literally rot in place with no paint maintenance for several years. Now instead of just having to paint them we'll probably have to replace them. I think this is a very short sited way to conserve funds but then again, I always thought the City Manager's $450K salary and benefits was ridiculous to.

It would help LH to be recognized as a health conscious city and beautify it at the same time. With its proximity to LH high school and the soccer fields it would be an extension and add great quality of life. The 5 Lagunas will have enough retail/living space with its added apartments. A classy city sports park would help beautify the city.

At first it didn't bother me but our dogs went crazy with the fireworks. I wasn't home at the time, but I need to be informed so I can leave the city with my dogs. They were also hyperventilating till 3-4 in the morning because of the fireworks so close to our neighborhood.

Had you put in a Trader Joes, there would be a line around the block. Instead, someone thought it would be a good idea to put a Smart and Final there? I am watching as they tear out all the beautiful wood flooring, and stainless fixtures, and nice lighting... and slap in the generic warehouse shelves of an ugly Smart and Final where I will never shop. What's next? The Nellie Gail Ranch $.99 Store? So I guess someone is expecting people to go to a Day Spa, or a personal trainer, or a high end salon, and then go shop at the Smart and Final? Really?

Residents who live on Costeau etc travel to Hon turn left and drive thru my neighborhood. The city has heard multiple complaints in the past from the neighbors..nothing effective has been done to decrease the # of cars, running stop signs, speeding. Lake Forest, MV, Laguna Niguel, has all installed speed bumps in problematic neighborhoods. What is the plan to control this dangerous topic before someone gets hit or killed by the general public. A need for a planning commission is paramount in creating a community to serve its citizens. We need a more balanced approach not one that is driven solely on developers who have only their self-interest at heart. The structure being built on avenida Carlota is a major eye sore that had little citizen involvement. Now we are faced with another project proposed on Alicia and Bentley (the former Mazda dealership ). Citizens (taxpayers) need to be better informed by the city on what is being proposed. Also the council meetings need to inform citizens on what is on the agenda to be discussed beforehand so we can decide whether to be involved.

I think it'd be great if Laguna Hills started a permaculture project. It could potentially improve the community in a number of ways, including:
- Increase property value, while decreasing maintenance costs
- Potential development of a community-raised market for fresh locally produced organic/non-GMO food
- Educational benefits for children and families
- Increase community participation and build valuable relationships
What I have in mind is something like what the "Urban Farming Guys" are doing in Kansas City, MO (www.theurbanfarmingguys.com). The only difference would be that the projects would be done on public properties. The city would provide the venue where people in the neighborhood can come and volunteer to learn and apply permaculture methodologies to develop a community garden, or whatever project is most suitable for that space. The produce grown on the property would be sold at local farmers markets and used to further finance the project and expand its development.

Did you know that 1 in 285 kids WILL be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20? Did you know that childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by diseases in kids under the age of 19 in the US? Or how about that dogs have a higher rate of cancer, as much as 70% higher in a household that uses lawn chemicals?
One of the big causes... pesticides, which is an umbrella term for ALL cides, like herbicide, fungicide, etc. Cide means to kill and cide is not picky about WHAT it kills.
The quality of life diminishes when herbicides such as Roundup are being used in our city and the drift of these poisons come in contact with all who are near. Remember, cide is not picky. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup is now found in breast milk and urine and wrecks havoc on the human body and especially children, elderly, and pregnant women.
Cities such as Irvine, Encinitas, and San Clemente have all implemented Organic Landscape Management.
